One Aldwych Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea

Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych with the theme as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

One of our favourite childhood films incorporated into afternoon tea equals our favourite meal of the day!

Who doesn’t love afternoon tea with a twist, right?!

At One Aldwych in London’s Covent Garden they have created a scrumdiddlytmptious afternoon tea inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic tale, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and guess what, you don’t need a golden ticket to get in! No detail is too small, you can expect decadent golden eggs, blueberry brioche and playful flavoured candy floss on the menu, just the way Willy Wonka would have liked it. You will be sure to be transported back to your 10 year old self; however we must include the disclaimer that we cannot guarantee that you won’t come out looking and feeling like Augustus Gloop!!

From the moment you walk in staff are attentive and lead you to your table. The actual setting for this spectacular afternoon tea is the stunning Indigo restaurant located on the first floor. As our waitress (no umpa lumpas in sight!!) led us to our table I investigated every corner but I couldn’t find a chocolate river and although I was tempted to lick the wallpaper I figured this might embarrass my boyfriend a little bit too much!!

Once seated we curiously watched as others received their afternoon treats, whilst sipping on some chocolate tea (yes, there is such a thing as chocolate tea and let me tell you it is absolutely delicious!) The Charlie and the Chocolate factory afternoon tea feature many flavours of tea, both weird and wonderful – our favourites were the mango and the peppermint. Finally it was our turn!! The playful menu started with a selection of finger sandwiches, which included cucumber and smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise with watercress and Coronation chicken. Further savoury options included vegetable Wellington and leek, walnut and Montgomery cheddar quiche. The storybook adventure really began for us when the sweet treats were presented. First up a golden egg filled with vanilla cheesecake, then lemon and white chocolate cake pops. The fun didn’t stop there, next there was Eton mess, homemade candyfloss, blueberry brioche and to finish warm scones served with Devonshire clotted cream and berry jam!  Once finished I felt like Violet Beauregarde when she turned into a giant blueberry, and was convinced that I was going to need to be rolled out of One Aldwych (thankfully that was not the case!!)

All in all it was a very enjoyable afternoon and I would highly recommend it for both adults and children alike. The Charlie and Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea is served daily and each sitting is 2 hours long.  A gluten free, vegan and vegetarian menu is also available – just let the staff know when booking if you have any special dietary requirements.  Let us know in the comments below if you are booking to go or have been before and if there are any other afternoon teas that you would recommend.
